What I’ve been up to:

I’ve had another quiet week, still catching up on housework and yardwork.

Happy Labor Day weekend to all the US bloggers. Are you doing anything interesting this weekend? I’m not. I tend to avoid the holiday weekends and just stay home. We get a lot of tourists flooding into town on the long weekends, so I like to stay home and avoid crowds.

I posted a photo of our youngest dog, Balto, last week. We have 3 dogs, so this week I’ll post a photo of Lizzy, our oldest dog. She’s a mix of Rhodesian Ridgeback and Labrador. My son rescued her from the Humane Society. She’s almost 7 years old. When she was an unruly puppy, my sister came to visit, and Lizzy was running around playing in the backyard and knocked my sister down and broke her ankle. My sister had only been at the house 20 minutes! We had to call the paramedics and my sister was transported to the hospital where she had to have emergency surgery where they put several screws and fasteners in my sister’s ankle. But, since that incident, Lizzy has been a wonderful companion and she’s super sweet and loving.

Lizzy!
Happy Chickens finding bugs

I finally got the chicken yard mowed, and the chickens were happy to have more room to run around as they enjoyed the bugs and seeds that were on the ground after I mowed.

Last week I read:

I had a really good week of reading, all the books were excellent! The standouts were Thank you for Listening and Lucy by the Sea.

Next week I hope to get to:

What I Watched:

Whoa, that’s quite a Lizzy story. I’m planning on doing a reading binge of Elizabeth Strout. So curious to read all about it. Have a good week.

  2. We don’t do anything on holiday weekends for the same reason. My usual goal is to minimize crowds as much as possible! Lizzy looks so sweet but ouch! My dog clocked me in the shin with his big blocky head a few weeks ago and I was pretty sure he had broken my leg for a moment. Luckily it just developed a big goose egg (did you know you could get a goose egg on your shin?) but man it hurt! I hope you’re having a wonderful week!

  3. I worked on Labor Day, so I was out dealing with the flood of tourists! Your dog is very cute. I had a pitbull / shepherd mix who knocked me over several times during her lifetime. Luckily, I never got hurt.

  4. Looks like you had great week. It’s great Lizzy has been sweet after that unfortunate incident. Pets really make life lovely.

  5. Has your sister forgiven Lizzy? 🤗

Oh! I will be watching for your thoughts on The Rules of Magic! It was my favorite of the series. 😍 Next year I’m going to re-read Magic Lessons and The Rules of Magic. 😃

I hope your week has started out well. ☀

  6. I like staying home on holidays but our daughter and SIL wanted us to come and visit and babysit one night so we went down. Thankfully it’s now only a 2 hour drive and we didn’t get extra traffic during the times we traveled.

I bet you felt bad about your sister, but accidents do happen. Puppies have lots of energy and there’s no getting around that. I hope your sister’s all healed up. Lizzie looks like a sweet dog. I’d love to get some chickens! They’re so cute and their chicken behavior makes me smile.

Hope you’re enjoying the holiday, Wendy!

    • Thank you, Rachel. My sister is all healed up and has even come back and visited since! Chickens are a lot of fun, they are so cute to watch.

  7. I prefer to spend holiday weekends at home, too. Away from the crowds. I’ve enjoyed the extra day off so much. Glad to see you enjoyed Than You for Listening. All my blogger friends seem to love that one.

  8. Lizzy sure is a cutie! Glad she settled down. We rescued a cat from the shelter eight years ago, and I swear he didn’t sleep for the first couple years we had him, lol. He’s pretty chill now and enjoyed several naps per day like most cats. Have a great week, Wendy!

  9. Happy Labor Day! We’re having a quiet one too. What a story about the dog and your sister! At first I thoguht this had just happened, but then I read it again and saw you meant when he was a puppy. 🙂

Hope you’re having a nice weekend.

  10. We tried to avoid the traffic by taking a motorcycle ride to a nearby town for lunch on Friday. The road was full of other motorcycles and campers who had decided that the highway speed limit was just too low. I can’t understand anyone would be in such a panic to get somewhere to RELAX!😉

  11. Lizzy is very big, isn’t she? That was a fine howdy-do for your sister. Glad the Lizzy calmed down. She sure is a stately lady of a certain age. Hope you have a great week!

  12. Happy (almost) Labour Day from Canada! I tend to avoid the touristy parts of Toronto on weekends like this one, too. They’re overflowing with people and will be much quieter if one waits a week or two to go.

My brother has pet chickens, too, and recently bought some ducklings as well. Birds are such interesting creatures.

Wow, your poor sister. I hope her ankle is okay now.

    And Lizzy is adorable.

  13. Enjoy your weekend, I’m staying home and relaxing on the extra day off. Lizzy and the chickens are cute! Snowed in for Christmas looks like a nice read.

  14. Awww! Lizzy’s so cute! 😀 And, I don’t have any plans this weekend either. I avoid crowds, especially with COVID. So, instead of going to the lake this weekend, the husband and I are going next weekend.

  15. Lizzy sounds like a lovely dog, now that she has calmed down from her exuberant puppy year(s). Your poor sister, though!

We’re having a quiet Labor Day weekend, too. Well, I’ll be working, but since I work from home, that doesn’t require seeing anyone. My only other plans are a walk if it’s not too hot, and cutting my husband’s hair.

Have a great week, and enjoy your planned books—they all look great!

  16. I like to stay in on holiday weekends too–especially when they are as hot as this one has been. Lizzy is a big adorable girl! She sounds like she was a handful in her younger years. Your poor sister! I noticed our next door neighbor recently got chickens. My husband said he watched their little dog chase them around the other day from one of the windows in his office area. I am glad you had such a great reading week. I loved Rules of Magic. I hope you will too. I hope you have a great week and happy reading!

    • Oh no! My sister was very understanding, she realized the dog was just over-excited and didn’t mean to do anything, but I did feel really bad for a long time.

  17. Love the photos. What a beautiful dog. I’m so sorry that incident happened, but glad it’s been much better since then. Have a great week! Looks like many great books are in your future. 🙂

  18. What a wonderful week you had – and you were able to read so much! Snowed in for Christmas was one of my favourite reads so far in 2022 so I hope that you love it as much as I did! Have a wonderful week ahead Wendy!

  19. Jenny+McClinton

Sounds like you had a great week, and hope you enjoy the holiday even if you stay home. I tend to do the same where I live as I live by the seaside so the town gets very busy in holidays. Hope you have a great week 💕

  20. What an awesome week you had Wendy! I can’t wait to get to Dreamland!! Lizzy is such a beautiful girl! Have a wonderful weekend and I avoid the crowds as well!🤗☕📚🌞💜

  21. Janette

I definitely know what you mean about staying in on public holidays to avoid the crowds. Enjoy a peaceful long weekend with your books 😀
