The first in an all-new series by New York Times best-selling author Kendare Blake continues the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer featuring the next generation of Scoobies and Slayers who must defeat a powerful new evil.
A new Slayer for a new generation...
Frankie Rosenberg is passionate about the environment, a sophomore at New Sunnydale High School, and the daughter of the most powerful witch in Sunnydale history. Her mom, Willow, is slowly teaching her magic on the condition that she use it to better the world. But Frankie’s happily quiet life is upended when new girl Hailey shows up with news that the annual Slayer convention has been the target of an attack, and all the Slayers—including Buffy, Faith, and Hailey’s older sister Vi—might be dead. That means it’s time for this generation’s Slayer to be born.
But being the first-ever Slayer-Witch means learning how to wield a stake while trying to control her budding powers. With the help of Hailey, a werewolf named Jake, and a hot but nerdy sage demon, Frankie must become the Slayer, prevent the Hellmouth from opening again, and find out what happened to her Aunt Buffy, before she’s next.
Get ready for a whole new story within the world of Buffy!
In Every Generation by Kendare Blake is the first book in her Every Generation series which is all about the second generation of vampire slayers and features the characters from the Buffy The Vampire Slayer television series. In this first book, we are introduced to the next generation of slayers, with a healthy dose of the familiar characters from the TV series.
Frankie Rosenberg is the daughter of Willow (yes! Buffy’s best friend from the series) and lives in Sunnydale. She grew up knowing all about the slayers and witches, and Buffy and her gang of scoobies, and is happy that it’s all in the past. She considers the old scooby gang her family and close friends. She is just starting to discover she has some of her mother’s magical powers but hasn’t done any witch training because her mother, once the most powerful witch in the land, doesn’t practice witchcraft anymore, and she doesn’t want to upset her mother by practicing.
Then one day, Spike brings Hailey to Willow’s and Frankie’s home with news that a bomb went off at the slayer convention in Halifax, and most of the slayers, including Buffy, are missing and presumed dead. Hailey is the sister to Slayer Vi, and wants to go to Halifax to find her sister. A new generation of scoobies is formed as they work together to find out what happened at the convention.
I was a “casual” fan of the Buffy the Vampire series, not a super fan. I did not watch every single episode, nor do I remember much about the series, except who the main characters are, and that it was fun to watch. So, If you’re looking for a review that can compare and contrast the book with the original series, this is not the review for you. However, I am reviewing the book for entertainment value. And I can honestly say, I enjoyed the book very much. It’s so much fun to re-visit the original characters and meet the second generation of scoobies.
The book started just a bit slow as the author introduced some of the newer characters and re-introduced us to the original characters. Once the action started, this book was a real page-turner. I had to know what happened to the slayers and how this new group of scoobies will handle dangerous situations.
One thing that I really liked about reading the book, is that I could be inside Frankie’s head as she realized she might be a slayer. Unlike Buffy, Frankie knows many slayers and knows what they do, so becoming a slayer was both frightening and kind of exciting for her. And as the daughter of a witch, she becomes the first-ever witch/slayer.
I will definitely be reading the next book in the series to find out what comes next! I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
