From USA Today bestseller and Edgar Award nominee Elle Cosimano, comes Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun—the hilarious and heart-pounding next installment in the beloved Finlay Donovan series.

"Fresh, heartfelt and witty, Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun is a twisty page-turner, and its relatable heroine Finlay Donovan is irresistible!" —Janet Evanovich, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Stephanie Plum series

Dating. Diapers. And dodging bullets. Who said single moms can't have fun?

Finlay Donovan has been in messes before—after all, she's an author and single mom who's a pro at getting out bloodstains for rather unexpected reasons—but none quite like this. After she and her nanny/partner-in-crime Vero accidentally destroyed a luxury car that they may have "borrowed" in the process of saving the life of Finlay's ex-husband, the Russian mob got her out of debt. But now Finlay owes them

Still running the show from behind bars, mob boss Feliks has a task for Finlay: find a contract killer before the cops do. Problem is, the killer might be an officer.

Luckily, hot cop Nick has started up a citizen's police academy, and combined pressure from Finlay's looming book deadline and Feliks is enough to convince Finlay and Vero to get involved. Through firearm training and forensic classes (and some hands-on research with the tempting detective), Finlay and Vero have the perfect cover-up to sleuth out the real criminal and free themselves from the mob's clutches—all the while dodging spies, confronting Vero's past, and juggling the daily trials of parenthood.

Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun by Elle Cosimano is the third book in her very popular Finlay Donovan Series and can be read as a stand-alone novel.  This book is an excellent addition to the series and I enjoyed it as much as I’ve enjoyed the previous books in the series.

Story Recap:

Mystery writer and single mother Finlay Donovan and her nanny/best friend Vero are at it again when they accidentally crush a luxury car, the Russian mob purchases the car, and now Finlay and Vero are beholden to the mob.   The mob boss who is running things from behind bars, asks Finlay to find out who the contract killer is.  The contract killer might be a cop, so Finlay and Vero sign up for the week-long citizen’s police academy to try and suss out the killer, and to gain some insight into police procedures for Finlay’s book.

My Thoughts:

I was so happy to be back in Finlay’s orbit, along with Vero and the other fun characters of the Finlay Donovan series.  Like the previous books, this one has nonstop action, and these characters were in almost constant peril.  Along with the impending danger is the trademark humor that always makes me laugh out loud when I’m around these characters.

The storyline is a bit over the top, and in my opinion, that is what makes this book and series so good.  If you’re one that likes your books realistic and believable, this may not be for you.  But, if you just want some fun and entertainment, you can’t get much better than the Finlay Donovan series.

Recommendation:

I highly recommend Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun to anyone who enjoys fiction.  I received a complimentary copy of this book.  The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

  1. IM SO GLAD YOU ENJOYED THIS. look unrealistic BUT ALSO HILARIOUS books are my most favorite ever so I can’t wait to get to the series IT SOUNDS PERFECT!!!!!

  2. I finally reserved the first book in the series and I’m just waiting for my library approval to come through. Looking forward to it!

  3. All of the books in this series are high on my TBR list! I need to read them quickly before there’s a fourth book out and I’m even farther behind. ;D

  4. I’m glad Finlay Donovan continues to be a good read for you. I occasionally like to read over the top books. You suspend reality for a while, and the author winks and the reader winks back. Fun!

  5. I definitely need to continue this series. I got into a kind of romcom/murder mystery thing a couple of years ago after reading Dial A for Aunties… but then I felt like nothing else I read lived up to that. I wound up not continuing Finlay Donovan after the first and the same happened with Arsenic and Adobo. Maybe I need to spend this year reading their continuations so that I can rediscover the stories and potentially enjoy them more now that I’m not comparing them so hard to something else haha! Plus, Elle lives near me and so she always does events at my favorite bookstore… I’d like to actually have a reason to attend those 😉

  6. I love when over the top things work out to better the story. This sounds like a great series. I’ve been into mystery and thrillers lately, so this sounds great for me. Thanks for the review!

Glad you enjoyed this one! I’ve thought about reading this series but with it being over the top I don’t think it would be for me.

I’ve never read any of these but have seen so many great reviews for them that I think I need to add them to my TBR.
