My Review:

Songbird by Gail Meath is the first book in her Jax Diamond Mysteries #1, a fun cozy mystery set in 1923 New York City.  This fast-paced mystery has bright and well-drawn characters and a very courageous German Shepard named Ace.  

Laura Graystone is the songbird of the title, an up-and-coming musical theatre actress who has just been thrust into the limelight when a leading lady is murdered. Jax is the cocky and confident PI, a former detective who keeps close contact with his ex-police partner, Murph.  

After a famous playwright, Sam is found dead in his office, the authorities are quick to label his death as natural causes.  But his missing manuscript and a few details from the crime scene make Jax feel like the death is possibly murder.  The manuscript is for his new musical, and its disappearance means somebody was desperate to get to it.  Jax enlists Laura to help him, as she was supposed to be the leading lady in the new play.  

Songbird is a mystery with a bit of romance, and the mystery takes center stage throughout this book.  I could not figure out the murderer until the end, and for me, that makes an excellent mystery.  I devoured this book in no time as I couldn’t wait to see who the murderer is and why Sam was murdered.  

I also enjoyed the setting of New York City in the roaring twenties.  The author included so many great descriptions of the city, the fashion, and the gritty details of the city during this time period.  I felt transported to this time and loved experiencing the excitement of this time.  

I highly recommend Songbird to anyone who enjoys historical fiction mysteries.  I received a complimentary copy of this book.  The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

    Wonderful review Wendy. This sounds like one I would enjoy and I am definitely going to look for it. I love mysteries and don’t think I have read a series set in the twenties before.
