My Review:

Cassandra by Linda O’Byrne is the first book in the authors The Cousins of Pemberley series.  If you’re a fan of Pride and Prejudice, you’re going to enjoy this book! I’ve always wanted to know what happens to the characters of P&P, and this book is all about the next generation of P&P characters.

This first installment in the series features Cassandra Wickham, the daughter of Bennett’s sister Lydia, and the scoundrel George Wickham.  Cassandra is now eighteen years old and she lives with her mother Lydia, and her stepfather.  Her father George was killed overseas many years ago.  Cassandra, while at a ball, overhears her stepfather in a bidding war to marry her off to the highest bidder!  She can’t marry the old man who won the bet, so she runs away that night in order to escape marriage to a man she can’t stand.

Cassandra escapes to her favorite Aunt’s home but finds her Aunt Elizabeth and Uncle are away, but her cousin Bennetta is home and takes her in while they figure out what to do next.

I loved how the author imagined the future for these characters.  The “second generation” is now waiting to find their true loves.  The writing is similar to the original version, and the characters are realistic and interesting.  The author gives excellent descriptions of the settings and the clothing of that time period.  The dialogue is also very Austen-ish.  However, I found this story quite a bit easier to read than the original P&P, as it felt updated, without losing the original atmosphere of the book.

I highly recommend Cassandra, to anyone who loves Pride and Prejudice, or romance novels from this time period.  I received a complimentary copy of this book.  The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

  1. AHHH…Thanks for sharing a review. I’m a huge P&P fan so any mention of it intrigues me. This is an interesting extension of the story. I may have to check this out. Great review!

  2. I love this sort of fan fiction continuation of P&P. I’d love to know what happens to the original characters and this sounds like a fun way to catch up.

I used to read a lot of Jan Austen, but I haven’t for a while. I used to love them though 💕

Lovely review, Wendy. I’m one of those strange souls who doesn’t enjoy Austin’s books. Love watching the film adaptations, though.
