7 Reason To Use an E-Reader (Instead of Paper Books)

I love the look and smell of a real book. Take me to a bookstore or a library, where I can smell the old, and new books, and I’m happy. I have so many fond memories of sitting in a library with my brother and sisters, reading, and looking for new books. My mother used to take us to the library every week.

So, why do I prefer an e-reader?  Here are seven reasons why I prefer an e-reader, and you might too.

I’ve moved over 30 times in my life, and moving boxes of books got to be a real burden. Plus, I never knew how much storage, or shelving I would have in my new house. With an e-reader, I can keep thousands of books on my e-reader and just keep a few of my much-loved books on the shelf at home. I’ve read so many books over the years, I can’t imagine where I could store all those paper copies.

I can stuff my e-reader in my purse, or use my e-reader app on my phone or tablet, and I have my book just about anywhere I go. It’s especially useful for waiting in the doctor, dentist, hairdresser, and DMV offices! I can take it everywhere with me, and I don’t have to lug a huge box of books!

Reading in poor light can hurt your eyes. I remember my mother always telling me to turn on a light, as I was reading in bed, or on the couch. Now that I’m older, I have to have good light as my eyes tire much more easily than when I was younger. Most e-readers allow you to adjust the light of the screen, so you can adjust it to your environment.

Like having the perfect light, having the right-sized font is also important. Fonts that are too small can make it difficult to read, and strain your eyes. And Fonts that are too large, make a book seem to last forever. I like that I can easily adjust the size of my fonts on my e-reader. Also, I can change the font. Some fonts are just harder to read than others. I like a simple Ariel or Times New Roman font.

I enjoy looking at books in a bookstore as much as most people. The smell of the ink and paper, a coffee shop inside the store (usually) and I’m just as happy as the next person. But, when I’ve just finished a book in a series, and I want more, it’s so easy to go online, and find the next book in the series and be reading it immediately. In bookstores the books are shelved by genre, and then author name, or by subject (usually). Your online bookstore can be searched in many different ways. Author name, genre, keywords, date of publication, and many more. Complex algorithms can find your recommendations for your next book too.

It’s much easier for publishers and retailers to offer free digital books for download than to pay the shipping costs for paper books. With an e-reader, you have immediate access to all these free books. Of course, I believe in paying for books, especially ones that I live, but sometimes it’s nice to get free books to see if you like a particular author, or genre, or series and then pay for the book to give to friends or have in my own library to read later.

Here is a post by TCK Publishing that has a good comprehensive list of places to download free books. https://www.tckpublishing.com/websites-download-free-ebooks/

  1. I agree with all your reasons for using an e-reader Wendy! I enjoy the feel of a physical book and to look at the covers. But the convenience of an e-reader wins!
