Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want. Today’s Top 10 13: 2021 Books I’m Too Scared to Read.
I don’t like horror or scary books for myself. I can however appreciate the talent it takes to write a horror story. These books are too scary for me, either the cover or the title or both have me scared to read them. And instead of Top Ten, I’m doing Top Thirteen, because it’s HALLOWEEN!
#1. Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw has one of the creepiest covers I’ve ever seen!
#2. Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo has a happy title that makes me think of summer, but that cover is so creepy!
#3. What Big Teeth by Rose Szabo has a creepy title that makes me think it’s a creepy Little Red Riding Hood re-telling. But that cover tells me it’s very scary re-telling!
#4. Near the Bone by Christina Henry has both a creepy title and cover!
#5. Survive the Night by Riley Sager has a scary title and that dark road, with those headlights!
#6. The Mary Shelley Club by Goldy Moldavsky has a creepy cover. That hand going around her throat!!
#7. My heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones has both a scary title and cover. That slash across the front tells me this is not going to end well.
#8. The Children God Forgot by Graham Masterton has a creepy cover. That paper doll with the red string around it makes me feel like this book is going to be a frightening book for me.
#9. The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward has a creepy cover. The title isn’t bad, it could be the title of a romance novel.
#10. The Devil Makes Three by Tori Bovalino has both a scary title and a creepy cover! That woman’s face with out her eyes! YIKES!
11. Lock Every Door by Riley Sager is another terrifying cover. The title is pretty scary. One look at this book and you know it’s a horror story!
12. The Boogeyman by Richard Chizmar is frightening because we all know the boogeyman is a scary guy. And that cover, with that lone green sneaker, gives me the chills!
13. Whisper Down the Lane by Clay McLeod Champman has a very creepy cover. Those children circled around a Pentagram….The combination of the innocence of children and the devil’s symbol means this book is going to be horrific.
Do you read horror stories? If so, what are you favorites? Comment below!
These look terrifying! I’m actually excited for Near The Bone. The synopsis of that one sounds pretty good.
I find thrillers more terrifying than horror books. Great list!
That’s interesting Yesha, is it because Thrillers are more relatable, and could possibly happen?
I’m scared to read them all too!
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who is too scared to read horror!
I won’t be reading these books either. The covers are enough for me!

Thank you Pam,
I love this list because they all sound like things I’m too scared to read too!
I”m so glad I”m not the only scardy cat!
For some reason horror books don’t scare me as much as movies. I haven’t read any of these, but I wouldn’t ever read The Exorcist.
I don’t like either horror books or movies, but I could probably get through a book easier than a movie.
The Last House is one I’ve seen lots of good things on. Love the cover of Survive the Night.
Thank you Greg, I have heard good things about The Last House as well.
Some creepy covers and equally scary stories. The Last House on Needless Street is definitely not a romance, though there is a character looking for love in it. Great list!
Thank you Tessa!
I love your twist on the topic! I’m not a big horror fan, but I do like a scary story once in a while. SURVIVE THE NIGHT really isn’t that scary, although it definitely is tense. LOCK EVERY DOOR gave me the shivers, for sure.
Happy TTT!

Thank you Susan! I do believe it takes a lot of talent to write a good horror book.
What genres of books do you like? Do you like Halloween in general?
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
I generally go for Women’s fiction and romance, especially romantic comedy. I don’t really like Halloween very much, mostly because I don’t read horror books. But, I do appreciate the work that goes into writing a book that is so scary.
I love that you did 13 books for this week’s list. So appropriate! I’m hoping to read Survive the Night this weekend, but I don’t mind books that are a little bit scary. 🙂
Thank you Lark! There are so many horror book covers that it was easy to do more. LOL. I hope you enjoy Survive the Night!
I am on a library waitlist for Nothing But Blackened Teeth.
I have no idea if I’ll actually be able to read and/or finish it. We’ll see how scary it is!
Oh good, I hope you do enjoy it when you get to read it.
I have a few of these on my tbr! I don’t usually pick up horror though and it always depends on how graphic it can be.
I hope you enjoy the ones on your TBR!
I love scary books! I’ve heard great things about Nothing but Blackened Teeth on NetGalley but I’ve been hesitating to pick it up because I’m terrified of Japanese folklore haha. Thank you for sharing this list, I can’t wait to check some of them out.
I don’t read scary books, but I think it takes quite an imagination and talent to write a good horror story.
Agreed the cover for Nothing But Blackened Teeth is freaking creeptastic, but reviews have been disappointing. This is a fantastic list!
Thank you Kimberly. It’s rare for a book cover to creep me out so much!
While I enjoy psychological thrillers I’m not really a fan of horror. This is scary list Wendy! Thanks for sharing it.
Thank you Jodie!
I really don’t like horror stories or films. Looking at those covers, none of them are going on my TBR!!!
I agree Jannette! I was beginning to think that I was the only person who doesn’t like horror stories.
Oh no, no, no, no. I can’t do it anymore. I could when I was younger but I cannot handle books like these anymore! Today I did morbid titles on my TBR list, but they are more humorous and cozy type mysteries than anything truly scary.
Thank you Cindy, I feel the same way!
