Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Each week a new theme is suggested for bloggers to participate in. Create your own Top Ten list that fits that topic – putting your unique spin on it if you want. Everyone is welcome to join but please link back to The Artsy Reader Girl in your own Top Ten Tuesday post.
Today’s Top 10: Reasons Why I Love to Read.
I love adventure, and reading is a good way to go on an adventure without the cost, the risk to life and limb, and time. I can go rock climbing, dancing, and even venture into space through the pages of the book, and still be home for dinner.
I’ll admit that I’ve led a fairly sheltered life, and I can’t possibly know what it’s like to live differently than the life that has chosen me. I can’t imagine what it’s like to live as a disabled person, or a person of color, or an LGBTQ+ person. But, I want to know the lives of others and the challenges they face. Books help me understand the challenges of people who don’t look like me or have a different lifestyle than I do.
After a bad day, a chance to read a fun, inspirational book is the perfect distraction to real life. And it often can change my mood, and give me some perspective. A light rom-com can make me laugh, or a tough gritty crime novel can make my problems seem trivial in comparison.
Reading works my brain. As I age, I want to exercise my brain and reading gives me the chance to ensure my brain is working and keeps my brain sharp.
I’ve traveled fairly extensively in my life, but there will always be places I want to go to, but I will never get that chance. Reading takes me to so many places in the world (and out of this world!) and even helps me to better understand some of the places I have been in my life. When an author can draw a picture of a location that is so vivid, that I feel like I’ve actually traveled there, that is one of the best pleasures of life.
I love it when authors bring me a glimpse into a culture that is something I could not experience in my real life. I love learning about people of different cultures and then finding out their lives are not so different than mine.
Let’s face it… sometimes we just need a good cry, or laugh! And books can give me the emotional release I need sometimes, even when I don’t realize I need it.
Whether waiting in a doctor’s office, dentist, or in line for a COVID shot, reading can help pass the time, that would otherwise be lost to just sitting. I can use that time, to delve into another world, or hang out with interesting characters.
I can learn about how wine is made, or how to run a cafe, or make jewelry. And I can learn about the history and the atrocities inflicted on people of our past, helping me to understand and analyze what is happening in the world today. I’m always discovering new information, and I love it when that new information is delivered through a story, or with great characters.
I enjoy reading! It’s fun, interesting and a great way to spend time.
Why do you love reading? Do you have any of the same reasons I love it? Comment below!
Great answers! I’m so glad I got back into reading a few years ago. It’s been nice to use it as a relaxer and escapism from everyday stress.
Thank you! Now that I’m retired, I read a lot more now, it’s so relaxing.
Most of ours are the same, love your graphics! I need to figure out how to do them! https://cindysbookcorner.blogspot.com/2021/07/top-ten-tuesday-reasons-why-i-love.html

Thanks Pam. This was a fun list. I just hopped over to your blog, and loved your reasons too.
I think we read for identical reasons Wendy! The only one I might add is the connection to other readers as a result of the bookish community! Thanks for sharing!
I agree with all of these, but I think #10 sums it up best for me (I ended my list the same way). Reading is just FUN. It’s something I’ve always loved and always will!
Happy TTT!
