What I’ve been up to?

We loved our time camping in the desert, but it was nice to come home. Our dogs were extremely happy to see us, and our daughter was not as enthusiastic about our arrival home, but she did appear to miss us a little bit.

We went from:

TO

We enjoyed the warmer weather for a few weeks, and I enjoyed being outside and hiking and walking without having to be all bundled up. Camping in the desert is both relaxing (mentally) and exhausting (physically).

Last week I read:

I had a GREAT week of reading! Finlay Donovan was just as good as I expected, and it was fun to revisit those characters. Cheddar Late Than Dead was a wonderful addition to the Grilled Cheese Mysteries series and once again made me make a grilled cheese sandwich while reading. Make a Wish was also a great addition to the Spark House series and is now my favorite book in that series.

My “surprise” books this week were Maame and The One That Got Away. Both books are very intense books with a lot of emotion that tackle difficult and controversial subjects. Neither book is light or fun, but I was swept away by the stories. Both books are by debut authors.

  1. What a big change.

Toronto has barely gotten any snow this winter so far. I’m glad you’re getting to enjoy more of it!

  2. Those first few days back at home are always heaven no matter how great your vacation was! That Finlay Donovan series and the Grilled Cheese series are both on my TBR. Both look so fun. Have a great week!

  3. It’s great you had a lovely time and a good reading week. I will add both Maame and The One That Got Away when I’m mood for serious read.

  4. Vacations are fun but it is nice to come home. I miss my cat when I’m gone so I know what you mean getting back to your dogs. The scenery looks beautiful at both locations. We have the bundle up sort of weather too. I still get out and hike or run when it’s cold but I can’t even do that because of this constant rain! I think it’s supposed to finally die down on Thursday.

I’m interested in The Spare. I don’t read much or any non-fiction anymore, but I might make an exception for that one.

    • Being outside in the rain is hard for me., too. I hope it goes away on Thursday as predicted. The Spare is keeping my attention, so that’s good.

  5. A trip to some place warm sounds wonderful! I keep reminding myself that we will eventually get above freezing again! As for reading, I am almost done with Maame, and you’re right; it’s not an easy read.
I’m looking forward to some light reading with Cheddar Late Than Dead.

I Haven’t been camping in so long! Glad you all had fun. I’ve been reading different reviews about the book Spare! Many different thoughts on it.

    • Yes, the reviews are all over the place! It’s not the best memoir I’ve read, but it’s at least holding my attention.

  7. Camping and hiking sound, what I like to call, gloriously exhausting. I have never been camping but I always loved a hike where I came home filthy and dead-tired. LOL Normally I stay on trails and don’t filthy, but there was one time when we went on a night hike and SOME OF US didn’t think to bring a flashlight or a headlamp and found ourselves stumbling around in a dry riverbed in the pitch dark. I had to completely shut down my mind so I wouldn’t think about the tarantula we had seen earlier, when the sun was still up, or the other spiders and snakes that were probably right next to me. SOME OF US griped and complained about that for a long time but I found it exciting and exhilarating. We lived!!!! LOL

I hope you have a great week with some great books!

  8. Hubby and I have never camped before. We’d be clueless about how to even go about doing it, lol. And now you have me craving a grilled cheese sandwich! Have a great week, Wendy!

    • Thank you, Teri! I’ve been camping since I was a kid, so that helped. It’s not for everyone, that’s for sure. Have a great week, Teri!

  9. That mountain is so picturesque 😍. I didn’t really think about camping in the desert. I know people do it but it doesn’t automatically come to mind when someone says camping. I can see where it would be physically exhausting yet mentally relaxing. And I bet your daughter was happy to have you home. Kids often don’t show things like that. Have a wonderful week!

  10. I am glad you had a good time camping. Quite different weather you returned to, wasn’t it? I am so glad you enjoyed the latest Finlay Donovan book. I can’t wait to read it. I am really curious about Maame. I hope you enjoy your upcoming reading and have a great week!

  11. I’m glad you had a wonderful time on your trip, Wendy. It is always nice to come home though, especially when you miss your furbabies. You had some great reading experiences and I am looking forward to reading and/or listening to almost all of these. Have a wonderful week.

  12. That looks like the Sonoran desert? At least, the saguaros make me think so. I’m glad you enjoyed your camping time, and the warmer weather.

I need to read Of Manners and Murder in the next few weeks. January is just zipping past, and February will be here before we know it! I hope you enjoy it, and the other books you’re looking forward to reading. Have a great week!

  13. Every time I see a Finlay Donovan cover, I’m reminded I need to read the series! And I’ve seen the Maame cover a couple times (it’s pretty distinctive!) but this time I took the time to look it up and add to my wish list. Have a great week Wendy.

  14. I am glad you enjoyed your camping and warmth. My friends in Durango, CO, and Chama, NM, talk of snow and cold weather coming up. I wonder if you are going to be getting that in the mountains of AZ.

  15. Glad you had a great week of reading, complete with grilled cheese! I love being outdoors, but I don’t think camping is for me. Lol. Have a great week ahead! 🙂

  16. I’m glad you loved your time camping in the desert.

I’m definitely not reading Spare, but I like hearing others’ opinions about it.

Maame has a beautiful cover! I’d like to read it.

  17. Glad you made it home safely. It is always nice to get home after a trip. I am not sure what Birthstone month is but I am looking forward to your post on Wednesday!!

  18. I’m glad you had a great vacation Wendy! I see you’ve decided to read Spare after all! I hope you enjoy all these books and have a wonderful week ahead.

  19. I’m so glad you enjoyed your trip Wendy and I’m sure nothing beats sleeping in your own bed. Have an awesome week and enjoy all of your upcoming reads. Stay warm!🌞📚☕🤗💜

  20. I’m glad you had a nice trip, it sounds wonderful with the warm weather and those views! Happy reading, I’m so tempted to grab a copy of Spare.
