What I’ve been up to?
We loved our time camping in the desert, but it was nice to come home. Our dogs were extremely happy to see us, and our daughter was not as enthusiastic about our arrival home, but she did appear to miss us a little bit.
We went from:
TO
We enjoyed the warmer weather for a few weeks, and I enjoyed being outside and hiking and walking without having to be all bundled up. Camping in the desert is both relaxing (mentally) and exhausting (physically).
Last week I read:
I had a GREAT week of reading! Finlay Donovan was just as good as I expected, and it was fun to revisit those characters. Cheddar Late Than Dead was a wonderful addition to the Grilled Cheese Mysteries series and once again made me make a grilled cheese sandwich while reading. Make a Wish was also a great addition to the Spark House series and is now my favorite book in that series.
My “surprise” books this week were Maame and The One That Got Away. Both books are very intense books with a lot of emotion that tackle difficult and controversial subjects. Neither book is light or fun, but I was swept away by the stories. Both books are by debut authors.
Next week I hope to get to:
I’m already about halfway through, Spare, and am finding it very, very interesting!

Have you read any of these books? What are you hoping to read this next week? What have you been up to last week? Comment below!
I had to laugh that your dogs were more excited about your return that your daughter was. Too funny. 🙂 I’m intrigued by The One That Got Away. It sounds like one I would enjoy.
What a big change.
Toronto has barely gotten any snow this winter so far. I’m glad you’re getting to enjoy more of it!
I miss camping! I have to wait until the kid is older. I think she’d be a pain in the ass if we tried camping now. I’m glad you enjoyed your books. Have a great week!
Those first few days back at home are always heaven no matter how great your vacation was! That Finlay Donovan series and the Grilled Cheese series are both on my TBR. Both look so fun. Have a great week!
It’s great you had a lovely time and a good reading week. I will add both Maame and The One That Got Away when I’m mood for serious read.
Did you get a ton of snow this weekend? I have an old college friend who lives in northern AZ and she posted picks with a crazy amount of snow. I bet it was a big switch back!
YES!! Lots and lots of snow, and more snow is expected tomorrow.
Vacations are fun but it is nice to come home. I miss my cat when I’m gone so I know what you mean getting back to your dogs. The scenery looks beautiful at both locations. We have the bundle up sort of weather too. I still get out and hike or run when it’s cold but I can’t even do that because of this constant rain! I think it’s supposed to finally die down on Thursday.
I’m interested in The Spare. I don’t read much or any non-fiction anymore, but I might make an exception for that one.
Being outside in the rain is hard for me., too. I hope it goes away on Thursday as predicted. The Spare is keeping my attention, so that’s good.
A trip to some place warm sounds wonderful! I keep reminding myself that we will eventually get above freezing again! As for reading, I am almost done with Maame, and you’re right; it’s not an easy read.
I’m looking forward to some light reading with Cheddar Late Than Dead.
Pam @ Read! Bake! Create!
Cheddar Late Than Dead is a much lighter read than Maame!
I haven’t read any of those books yet, but some are on my TBR. This week I’m looking forward to wrapping up Thank You For Listening and Adult Assembly Required.
I loved both of those books! I hope you do too
I’m so glad you had a nice trip, although yes, it is good to be home. It’s also great you had some awesome books to read.
Anne – Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Thank you, Anne!
Camping and hiking sounds fun! Spare is on our TBR.
I hope we all enjoy Spare!
I Haven’t been camping in so long! Glad you all had fun. I’ve been reading different reviews about the book Spare! Many different thoughts on it.
Yes, the reviews are all over the place! It’s not the best memoir I’ve read, but it’s at least holding my attention.
Camping and hiking sound, what I like to call, gloriously exhausting. I have never been camping but I always loved a hike where I came home filthy and dead-tired. LOL Normally I stay on trails and don’t filthy, but there was one time when we went on a night hike and SOME OF US didn’t think to bring a flashlight or a headlamp and found ourselves stumbling around in a dry riverbed in the pitch dark. I had to completely shut down my mind so I wouldn’t think about the tarantula we had seen earlier, when the sun was still up, or the other spiders and snakes that were probably right next to me. SOME OF US griped and complained about that for a long time but I found it exciting and exhilarating. We lived!!!! LOL
I hope you have a great week with some great books!
What a wonderful experience, Jinger! It’s times like that that make us stronger. I hope you have a good week.
Hubby and I have never camped before. We’d be clueless about how to even go about doing it, lol. And now you have me craving a grilled cheese sandwich! Have a great week, Wendy!
Thank you, Teri! I’ve been camping since I was a kid, so that helped. It’s not for everyone, that’s for sure. Have a great week, Teri!
That mountain is so picturesque 😍. I didn’t really think about camping in the desert. I know people do it but it doesn’t automatically come to mind when someone says camping. I can see where it would be physically exhausting yet mentally relaxing. And I bet your daughter was happy to have you home. Kids often don’t show things like that. Have a wonderful week!
I think our daughter enjoys the time by herself for a while but is happy to see us when we come home.
I am glad you had a good time camping. Quite different weather you returned to, wasn’t it? I am so glad you enjoyed the latest Finlay Donovan book. I can’t wait to read it. I am really curious about Maame. I hope you enjoy your upcoming reading and have a great week!
I didn’t know what to expect from Maame, but I really enjoyed it.
I’m glad you had a wonderful time on your trip, Wendy. It is always nice to come home though, especially when you miss your furbabies. You had some great reading experiences and I am looking forward to reading and/or listening to almost all of these. Have a wonderful week.
Thank you, Carla!
That looks like the Sonoran desert? At least, the saguaros make me think so. I’m glad you enjoyed your camping time, and the warmer weather.
I need to read Of Manners and Murder in the next few weeks. January is just zipping past, and February will be here before we know it! I hope you enjoy it, and the other books you’re looking forward to reading. Have a great week!
Yes! It’s the Sonoran desert! I hope to read Of Manners and Murder later this week. I hope we both enjoy it.
Every time I see a Finlay Donovan cover, I’m reminded I need to read the series! And I’ve seen the Maame cover a couple times (it’s pretty distinctive!) but this time I took the time to look it up and add to my wish list. Have a great week Wendy.
I think you’d enjoy the series, Terrie! So many books to read out there!
I am glad you enjoyed your camping and warmth. My friends in Durango, CO, and Chama, NM, talk of snow and cold weather coming up. I wonder if you are going to be getting that in the mountains of AZ.
Yes, we just got 9″ of snow today and have another snowstorm coming tomorrow and Tuesday expecting another 12″.! But, at least I got some time in the sun. 🙂
Wow! That is a lot of snow!
I’ll be reading Make a Wish soon I think! Just My Type is on my TBR as well. It’s always crazy when you come home from someplace like the desert to snowy normal home, lol. Hope you have a good week!
Thank you, Lisa! I just finished Just My Type and it was a lot of fun! I hope you enjoy it too!
Glad you had a great week of reading, complete with grilled cheese! I love being outdoors, but I don’t think camping is for me. Lol. Have a great week ahead! 🙂
My sisters don’t camp either. It’s not for everyone, that’s for sure.
It’s always nice to be home but sounds like you had a great time! That Hastings book looks like one I’d like.
It’s nice to be home. 🙂
I’m glad you loved your time camping in the desert.
I’m definitely not reading Spare, but I like hearing others’ opinions about it.
Maame has a beautiful cover! I’d like to read it.
I wasn’t going to, but then couldn’t resist. So, I’m listening! LOL. Maame is so good!!
Glad you made it home safely. It is always nice to get home after a trip. I am not sure what Birthstone month is but I am looking forward to your post on Wednesday!!
Oh, it is just covers that have the same colors as the birthstone of the month. It’s a fun little meme.
Glad you had a good trip! I’ll be excited to read your thoughts on Spare. I’m probably not going to read it but I do enjoy hearing others’ takes on everything.
So far, I’m enjoying the “story”. But, I still have a ways to go.
I’m glad you had a great vacation Wendy! I see you’ve decided to read Spare after all! I hope you enjoy all these books and have a wonderful week ahead.
I just couldn’t resist hearing what he thinks in his own words.
I’m so glad you enjoyed your trip Wendy and I’m sure nothing beats sleeping in your own bed. Have an awesome week and enjoy all of your upcoming reads. Stay warm!🌞📚☕🤗💜
Yes, it’s so nice to be home again. Have a great week, Susan.
I’m glad you had a nice trip, it sounds wonderful with the warm weather and those views! Happy reading, I’m so tempted to grab a copy of Spare.
Spare is such a controversial book. But, I’m enjoying it, as it’s easy to listen too.
I love what you went home to. Those mounttains are spectacular. Happy reading this week.
Thank you, Cathy. You and your camera would have a lot to photograph here!
Wow, those mountains are gorgeous! Where I live you definitely don’t have anything similar. It’s really amazing!
Thank you, Stephanie! I love where I live!
Glad that you had a lovely break. I read Maame this week too and loved it
Oh, wasn’t it something! I’m glad you enjoyed it too
Glad you had a good time & a great reading week 😊 Hope you have a great week 💕
Thank you, Jenny!
