sunday post

What I’ve been up to:

I had a much quieter week this week. The Tunnel Fire is mostly contained now, the smoke mostly went north of us, so we didn’t even have much smoke in the air.

I read a Facebook post from a man who stayed at his home during the fire to defend it. While we would NEVER stay to defend our home, the man who stayed, has some wildfire experience, and he made some interesting points about making your home defensible. He said he could tell which houses the fire would consume, and which houses had a good chance of surviving the fire, all by the way they kept up their yards.

The county posted a graphic of how to make a home defensible to help prevent wildfire damage.

So this inspired my husband and me to go out and mow and pull weeds and trim bushes etc, to help keep wildfire away. It was a lot of work, but very rewarding and I feel much safer now. We don’t have many trees in our yard, and the few we have are very small, but we had some tall grasses and weeds and out-of-control bushes.

Last week I read:

I had a good week of reading. All these books were excellent! My favorite was By The Book with The Homewreckers a close second. I read both Wedding Season and The Wedding Season which was confusing. Both are good books, but I thought The Wedding Season was better.

The three novellas by Ali Hazelwood were all very good, but too short. I would just be getting into the story when the man would interrupt and say “Audible hopes you’ve enjoyed this program.”

Next week I hope to get to:

What I Watched:

We have been watching Outer Range on Amazon Prime. We’re only on episode 4, and still not sure what to think of this show. It’s slow going, but there is a mystery that makes us keep watching it.

  1. Great work on the fire safety measures! I know it must help alleviate your concerns. I’ve never lived in an area prone to fires, but I have lived in an area prone to hurricanes and preventative measures do help calm the anxiety.

  2. That’s pretty interesting about the property set-up to keep your home safer from wildfires. Any added protection is good! I’ve yet to read anything by Backman even though I have several blogger friends who rave about his books.

  3. I am glad to hear the Tunnel Fire is mostly contained. I am dreading hearing about fires starting up this way as the weather warms up and the drought continues . . . You have read some great books from the sounds of it. I hope this week is finding you lost in more good books. Have a great week, Wendy.

  4. Glad the fire situation is better now Wendy, and you were able to take some safety measures for your yard. Looks like you had a great week of reading. The Daschund Wears Prada looks adorable. Wishing you a great reading week ahead.

    • Thank you, Mallika! The Daschund Wears Prada was a cute book. I love it when a dog is featured in a book.

  5. What a seriously fun post! I love that you share this recap to give us a peek into your life over the last week. Everything from fire safety, to what you read, to your blogging schedule, and more! It’s awesome! I haven’t read any of the books you read or plan to read – yet. But you’ve certainly made me want to pick some of them up 🙂

  6. Sure am glad the fire is mostly contained now, Wendy. You’re the second person I’ve come across today who has started Open Range and still unsure of how you feel about it. It’s on my list, so I’m hoping to get to it soon. I’m finishing up the last episodes of Ozark and started Heartstoppers on Netflix. Have a great week!

  7. it must be scary living where wildfires are in abundance! we don’t have them here (if we did, i’d be screwed as my house backs onto a gully reserve). good to see you can take some safety measures to better protect yourselves!

    • Yes, the wildfires are an issue here, but we don’t get hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes, so it’s a trade off!

  8. It is good to be prepared for a fire, but I don’t think I’d stay at my home either. You just never know if it’ll work out and a home is not worth your life. Glad to hear the threat has gone down and the smoke has cleared.

  9. I’m so glad to hear you’re okay! That sounds really scary and I’m happy you got rid of some weeds and bushes to be safe. Can’t wait to read your review for Our Little World! Happy May!

  10. I enjoyed A Man Called Ove, so I’ll be interested in your review of Anxious People. I’m glad to hear you are clear of wildfire threat. We have a cabin in the mountains of NM and we make it a priority when we are there to rake up all the pine needles to create a barrier. I understand what a job it is.

    • Thank you, Linda. I also want to read A Man Called Ove sometime soon. The mountains of New Mexico are so beautiful!!

  11. I’m glad the fire didn’t reach you and that your husband has made things safer for you. The Wedding Season and Wedding Season in the same week would be confusing! I enjoyed The Home Wreckers and look forward to reading By The Book. I loved Anxious People and hope you do too! Have a great week Wendy!

  12. I’m glad you improved your yard in case of wildfire. I know it was a lot of work but you and yours are definitely worth the time and energy. Have a great week, Wendy!

  13. That’s interesting about the wildfire defense! I would never have guessed that keeping up with your yard would have such a big effect… I hope you will enjoy Anxious People and have a wonderful week!

  14. The defense makes sense. Here it is more likely to have hurricane winds. Thankfully all the trees are at the back of the lot so even if they fell I don’t think they would hit the house. Plus we are two hours from the ocean so it never gets as bad here. Looks like you had some great reads. Happy May Day!

    • Happy May Day to you too, Anne. Hurricanes can be awful too. So glad your trees are away from the house.

  15. I’m glad the fire is under control now and that after all that work you feel safer. We deal with a lot of wildfires in my neck of the woods. It’s mostly due to the dry heat of summer, lightning, fireworks, campfires, and arsonists. We usually have to deal with a fire or two each year. My husband and I don’t live in or on the mountains, so we’re safe.

    • Same reasons for fire here too. We usually get one or two every season, but this was the closest they have ever come to our home.

  16. Now THAT is interesting about the wildfire defense. Who knew just how you keep your yard/ property could have such an effect?

I’ve been watching Outer Range too and I can’t decide if I like it or not! 🙂

  17. Clearing the brush and weeds from around your house was really smart. I’m so glad the Tunnel fire is mostly contained, and that you weren’t directly affected. My husband and I are on the east coast, but our adult child and some of my family live in New Mexico. Their whole town was evacuated for a huge fire back in 2000, and about 400 families lost their homes. (Not any of my family, fortunately.) The town did a whole lot of fire-reduction work after that, thinning trees on town land and encouraging people to reduce potential fire risks around their houses. Now another fire is burning about 10 miles away, smaller but still significant and mostly uncontained so far. We’re keeping as close eye on the fire reports as we can, from nearly 2000 miles away.

Your books all look fun, especially the Jasmine Guillory. I haven’t been reading much contemporary romance recently (I seem to be on a fantasy and historical mystery binge), but a few of those might tempt me back. Enjoy them, and have a great week!

    • Those fires in New Mexico are terrible. I’m so glad your family is safe. I hope you have a great week!

  18. Glad you had a great reading week! Also glad someone was able to give you helpful advice for preventing the wildfires from hitting your house. Have a wonderful week.

  19. That makes good sense to keep the brush and weeds cleared to help prevent the fire from an easy path to your home. Where I grew up in California, the fire dept would practice with controlled burns in empty fields near businesses or housing tracts.
LOL, yes two similar titles in the same week would get confusing.

Hope you have a good week, Wendy!

    • Thank you, Sophia! Yikes, controlled burns near houses seems a bit crazy! Here they do a lot of controlled burns, but out in the forest.

  20. What great news, Wendy. It must have been a lot of work to pull all of those weeks, but good for you for doing it. 🙂 And I’m glad the smoke isn’t blowing in your direction either.

I’ve heard great things about Anxious People. May you enjoy it.

  21. Jenny+McClinton

I’m glad the fires have died down & that you haven’t been affected 😊 great reading week, hope you have a great week this week 💕

    • I was thinking of you while starting to read The Dachshund Wears Prada as I know you have a couple of dachshunds!

  22. I’m glad you feel safer now! I hate yardwork, but it does leave me feeling accomplished after.
I am excited you’re going to read Anxious People! I loved that one. Same for Hunting’s book.

    • I hate yardwork too. But, I do the mowing now on the riding mower and that’s kind of fun. My husband has trouble with it due to his allergies, but I just listen to books and enjoy it.

  23. Janette

Making your house more fire resistant sounds like a very good use of your time to me. Glad that things are are improving
I don’t read many novellas for exactly the reason you give. I’m just getting into it and then it finishes😀 Have a great week Wendy
