Stacking The Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading Reality all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts, and of course ebooks! And audiobooks. Don’t forget audiobooks!

I got a lot of reading done this week, and I’m happy to get a couple of cozy mysteries.

I was sent a widget for this and it’s not something I would have chosen on my own. But, when I read the blurb and saw that it’s about sisters, and it’s set in the ’80s, I decided it sounded like something I would enjoy.

Synopsis: July 1985. It’s a normal, sweltering New Jersey summer for soon-to-be seventh grader Bee Kocsis. Her thoughts center only on sunny days spent at Deer Chase Lake, on evenings chasing fireflies around her cul-de-sac with the neighborhood kids, and on Max, the boy who just moved in across the street. There’s also the burgeoning worry that she’ll never be as special as her younger sister, Audrina, who seems to effortlessly dazzle wherever she goes.

But when Max’s little sister, Sally, goes missing at the lake, Bee’s long-held illusion of stability is shattered in an instant. As the families in her close-knit community turn inward, suspicious and protective, things in Bee’s own home become increasingly strained, most of all with Audrina, when a shameful secret surfaces. With everything changed, Bee and Audrina’s already-fraught sisterhood is pushed to the limit as they grow up—and apart—in the wake of an innocence lost too soon.

Perfect for readers of Celeste Ng’s Everything I Never Told YouOur Little World is a powerful and lyrical coming-of-age story that examines the complicated bond of sisterhood, the corrosive power of envy, and how the traumas of our youths can shape our identities for a lifetime.

I’m not always wild about dating shows, but this one looks good because the dating show is only the first part of the story. And it’s a fake dating trope, and I like those.

Synopsis: A reality star and a cupcake-baking football player pretend to be a couple in order to save his bakery in this sweet and sexy romance from Jamie Wesley, Fake It Till You Bake It.

Jada Townsend-Matthews is the most reviled woman in America after turning down a proposal on a reality dating show. When she comes home to lick her wounds, Jada finds herself working at San Diego’s newest cupcake bakery, Sugar Blitz, alongside the uptight owner and professional football player Donovan Dell.

When a reporter mistakenly believes Jada and Donovan are an item, they realize they can use the misunderstanding to their advantage to help the struggling bakery and rehabilitate Jada’s image. Faking a relationship should be simple, but sometimes love is the most unexpected ingredient.

Fake it Till You Bake It is a sweet confection of a novel, the perfect story to curl up with and enjoy with a cupcake on the side.

I’ve been enjoying the cozy mysteries I’ve read so far. So when I saw this is the start of a new series, I decided to request it.

Synopsis: Don’t miss the first book in a brand-new gripping and hilarious bookish cozy mystery series by author Tamara Berry! Put your sleuthing hat on-Buried in a Good Book features:
A thriller writer who knows way more than anyone should about death and dismemberment
Her young daughter who’s more intrigued by dead bodies than she probably should be
An isolated cabin in the woods that’s probably-definitely-hiding something
The tiny mountain town that seems less than troubled by a sudden abundance of murders.

Bestselling thriller writer Tess Harrow is almost at the end of her rope when she arrives with her teenage daughter at her grandfather’s rustic cabin in the woods. She hopes this will be a time for them to heal and bond after Tess’s recent divorce, but they’ve barely made it through the door when an explosion shakes the cabin. Suddenly it’s raining fish guts and…is that a human arm?

Tess was hardly convincing Gertie that a summer without Wi-Fi and running water would be an adventure. Now she’s thrust into a murder investigation, neighbors are saying they’ve spotted Bigfoot in the woods near her cabin, and the local sheriff is the spitting image of her character Detective Gabriel Gonzales-something he’s less than thrilled about. With so much more than her daughter’s summer plans at stake, it’s up to Tess to solve this case before anyone else gets hurt.

I’ve read previous books by Emily Giffin and really enjoyed them.

Synopsis: A restless golden boy and a girl with a troubled past navigate a love story that may be doomed before it even begins, in this irresistible new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of All We Ever Wanted and The Lies That Bind.

The Kingsley family is American royalty, beloved for their military heroics, political service, and unmatched elegance. In 1967, after Joseph S. Kingsley, Jr. is killed in a tragic accident, his charismatic son inherits the weight of that legacy. But Joe III is a free spirit—and a little bit reckless. Despite his best intentions, he has trouble meeting the expectations of a nation, as well as those of his exacting mother, Dottie.

Meanwhile, no one ever expected anything of Cate Cooper. She, too, grew up fatherless—and after her mother marries an abusive man, she is forced to fend for herself. After being discovered by a model scout at age sixteen, Cate decides that her looks may be her only ticket out of the cycle of disappointment that her mother has always inhabited. Before too long, Cate’s face is in magazines and on billboards. Yet she feels like a fraud, faking it in a world to which she’s never truly belonged.

When Joe and Cate unexpectedly cross paths one afternoon, their connection is instant and intense. But can their relationship survive the glare of the spotlight and the so-called Kingsley curse? In a beautifully written novel that captures a gilded moment in American history, Emily Giffin tells the story of two people searching for belonging and identity, as well as the answer to the question: Are certain love stories meant to be?

This is her second book in her Grilled Cheese Mysteries series. I really enjoyed her first book and I’m looking forward to this one. I will make sure I have plenty of bread, cheese, and tomato soup on hand for the inevitable grilled cheese cravings.

Synopsis: The second in a new cozy series! The muensters have arrived in Balsam Dell when a body is discovered at the Grilled Cheese Eatery.

The muensters have arrived in quaint Balsam Dell, Vermont! Grinning jack-o-lanterns glow from front porches and Halloween spirit reigns. After a long hot summer, Carly Hale is delighted that her grilled cheese eatery is thriving and the upcoming food competition—the town’s “Scary-Licious Smorgasbord”—is the perfect way to bring some additional traffic to the Eatery, along with a $500 cash prize.

But Ferris Menard, the owner of Sub-a-Dub-Sub, is nursing a serious grudge against Carly. Two days before the competition, one of Carly’s employees quit his part-time gig at Menard’s sub shop, alerting the local health inspector to some unsavory cooking standards and sending Menard into a serious snit. In a confrontation witnessed by Carly’s customers, Menard accused Carly of sabotage and vowed to expose her as a fraud.

That’s when Menard’s body is found in his kitchen the morning after the competition, a steak knife sticking out of his heart, Carly’s name instantly pops up in the investigation. But Menard had a slew of enemies, and if Carly doesn’t figure out which one is the culprit, she might find herself—or someone she cares about—serving grilled cheese sandwiches under lock and brie!

I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while, so I’m excited to get started on it.

Synopsis: Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jump-start her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late ’80s and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn’s life unfolds – revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love – Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Written with Reid’s signature talent for “creating complex, likable characters” (Real Simple), this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means – and what it takes – to face the truth.

That’s all I have for this week. Have you read any of these books? What’s on your list to read? Comment below!

  1. I haven’t read any of these books, but The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is on my TBR. I’m also thinking of reading Fake it Until You Bake it. I’m glad you had such a good reading week!

    • I just now finished Eveyn Hugo… It was wonderful! I had a list of things to do, and didn’t get any of it done because I had to finish the book!

  2. I will be waiting for your review of Buried in a Good Book, love the title and it sounds good! I also like the cover of Meant to Be. Have a wonderful weekend, Wendy!

  3. I’ve not read any of these! I will check them out though. I’m currently listening to Dave Grohl’s autobiography (he’s such an excellent storyteller!) on Audible and I need to pick my next book to read as I finished a Terry Pratchett Discworld book the other night.

  4. I just requested the Emily Giffin book, Wendy. Thanks for the heads up. I also got No Parm, No Foul. I hope you enjoy all your upcoming books.
