After a decade of silence, Dee and Ben reunite for a road trip they once promised to take. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

Dee Matthews is the cohost of the smash-hit podcast Did I Forget To Tell You?, where she interviews family, friends, and past lovers. Nothing is off limits, except for one man (known on the show only as Name Redacted) who happens to be her high school best friend Ben. During their senior year spring break, Dee and Ben took a road trip to visit Ben's grandma. They buried a time capsule in her backyard, pledging to return in ten years to open it. Then their friendship fell apart in spectacular fashion. They haven't spoken to each other since.

Ben Porter's life since that moment has been unexciting but comfortable, until his grandma reveals a family secret that flips his whole world upside down. Her dying wish is for him to stop doing what is safest and go after what he really wants. He starts by showing up on Dee's doorstep with every intention of fulfilling their long-ago promise. Despite her reservations, Dee can't say no. This trip could be her chance to give her listeners the Name Redacted interview they've been begging for--and finally put her unresolved feelings for Ben to rest.

As the miles fly by, Dee and Ben's friendship reignites. But the closer they get to reaching their destination, the more apparent it becomes that their attraction to each other cannot be ignored. Their last adventure ended in disaster, and they're about to find out if any hope of a future together is in the rear view mirror.

A Thousand Miles by Briget Morrissey is just as cute as can be.  This second chance romance and road trip romance is a perfect summer read.

Dee Matthews runs a podcast with her best friend Javi named “Did I Forget To Tell You?” where they overshare about their love lives, home life, and past.  They share everything with their listeners which is why the podcast is so popular.  The only thing Dee refuses to share is the name of her first boyfriend from high school, her first love, Ben.  They bleep out his name, and they use [name redacted] whenever they discuss him.

Dee and Ben broke up right after high school, and they have not been in touch in the past 10 years, so when Ben appears on Dee’s doorstep, she’s completely surprised.  Ten years ago, Ben promised Dee they would repeat their road trip from Chicago to Denver.  The original trip was made during spring break of their senior year in high school, and Ben is determined to keep his promise to Dee.  Dee can’t say no, so they embark on the 1000-mile road trip together.

I love a road trip story, so this book was just right for me.  Dee and Ben were best friends until that fateful road trip in high school, and then just when they became more than friends they broke up, never to see each other for the next 10 years.  This second chance romance is full of witty banter.  Both Dee and Ben come to some realizations during the trip and both learn more about each other and themselves making them better people in the end.

I recommend A Thousand Miles to anyone who enjoys romance and women’s fiction.  I received a complimentary copy of this book.  The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

  1. I’ve seen this cover but didn’t realize what this is about! I thought it was YA, lol. It reminds me of the YA book Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour but if they did it again a decade later. I’ll have to request this from the library.

  2. Forced proximity, like a shared road trip, is a great way to get a second chance. Glad to hear this was a hit!

  3. You had me at time capsule and podcaster. I need to add this one to my reading list Wendy. Thanks for sharing your wonderful review of this book.

  4. Sounds a fun read, Wendy. I like the road trip idea and also the sound of the banter between them. Glad you enjoyed it🙂🙂
