After the first Earth shuttle arrives, and aliens and humans alike begin to die, the station is thrown into peril. Stuck smack-dab in the middle of an extraterrestrial whodunit, and wondering how in the world this keeps happening to her anyway, Mallory has to solve the crime--and fast--or the list of victims could grow to include everyone on board....
Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty is the first book in her new sci-fi mystery series, The Midsolar Murders. The author does a wonderful job of mixing an exciting Sci-Fi setting with a compelling murder mystery.
Book Recap:
Mallory Viridian always seems to be nearby when someone is murdered. No, she’s not a murderer, but she has a habit of being close by murders and helps solve them. However, unlike the average cozy mystery series heroine, being around so much murder, doesn’t make her a hero for solving them, it makes her a social pariah, and worse, a suspect.
She finds solace and refuge on a sentient space station with only aliens on board. But, when the station starts to allow humans to visit, Mallory wonders if murder will follow.
My Thoughts:
I found this sci/fi mystery very entertaining. Mallory was a fun character to read about. All she wants to do is hide away, but trouble always seems to follow. The aliens on the ship were very creative and interesting characters, and I enjoyed the way Mallory interacted with them.
The mystery was very good, and I had no idea who caused all the mayhem until Mallory figured it all out and let us know. It really wasn’t much different than a regular murder mystery, just add in a space station full of aliens.
I don’t read much science fiction, so I can’t really vouch for how well this book does in that genre, but I can say that it’s an entertaining, and fun book. I found the characters compelling and the plot was interesting. I also liked the premise of having the main character attract murders. Instead of being cute like a Miss Marple, Mallory becomes a social pariah and an actual suspect.
Recommendation:
I recommend Station Eternity to anyone who enjoys Science Fiction. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
