Can’t Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally, they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.
Synopsis:
From Pulitzer Prize–winning, #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Strout comes a poignant, pitch-perfect novel about a divorced couple stuck together during lockdown—and the love, loss, despair, and hope that animate us even as the world seems to be falling apart.
With her trademark spare, crystalline prose—a voice infused with “intimate, fragile, desperate humanness” (The Washington Post)—Elizabeth Strout turns her exquisitely tuned eye to the inner workings of the human heart, following the indomitable heroine of My Name Is Lucy Barton through the early days of the pandemic.
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea.
Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire. At the heart of this story are the deep human connections that unite us even when we’re apart—the pain of a beloved daughter’s suffering, the emptiness that comes from the death of a loved one, the promise of a new friendship, and the comfort of an old, enduring love.

I loved Oh! William, and I have high hopes for this one.
I’ve never read one of Elizabeth Strout’s books, but I’ve heard such great things about them. I have her on my TBR and someday, I hope I can read one of her books.
She has a very different writing style that you either love… or not!
This is my intro to Elizabeth Strout. Sounds like the characters and situation are a strong draw.
Her writing is a bit different, so you either love her or don’t. I do, so I”m looking forward to this one.
I hope you enjoy the continuation of their story. Look forward to your thoughts, Wendy!
Thank you, Rachel! I hope so too!
This is an author I’ve heard a lot about but never read myself. I hope you love this book when you get it.
Thank you, Deanna! I hope so too!
I’ve yet to read a book that has to deal with the lockdown. I know I can read it, but I’m just not in the mood for them.
I can understand that. I don’t mind reading them myself, but I can understand why others don’t want to read them.
I know some people are hesitant to pick up reads that deal with the lockdown, but it’s so timely that it seems easily relatable in some ways.
I don’t mind reading about the lockdown, as it’s important to remember so we can appreciate not being locked down
This sounds wonderful, I can see why you can’t wait to read it! I’m looking forward to your review!
Thank you!
Could it be understood without reading the first book? It sounds interesting! 📚
I didn’t read the first two books in the series and I found the third book to be understandable. But, I think the background really helps.
I’ve read some interesting lockdown books, this sounds interesting.
I’m hoping it’s as good as it sounds!
I hope you enjoy it when you get your hands on it! Love the cover.
Thank you, Leslie!
I choose not to read things about the lockdown. Also I read that this is part of a series, and I am trying to cut down my reading list. You do make it sound tempting!
Thank you, Linda. Yes, it’s part of a series.
My list is so very long. Lol. 🙂
I can understand!
I hope that you enjoy this pick Wendy. I have read this author’s Olive Kitteridge and Olive, Again but found them a little depressing. I hope this one has a bit more joy.
I’ve only read Oh! William, and found that to be pretty good, but that’s all I’ve read of hers.
I hope you enjoy this one when you get a chance to read it. Have a great week, Wendy!
Thank you, Cindy. I hope you have a great week too.
Lucy by the Sea sounds like one would need a box of tissues close by.
I think so!
I hope you enjoy this one!
Thank you, Kristi!
I still haven’t read Strout yet, but I own one of her books, so I def need to remedy that. This sounds good!
She has an interesting writing style that just grabs you right away.
It sounds quite emotional, Wendy. Is this a sequel to Oh William? I haven’t read that one yet. I like the sound of this one.
It is a sequel to Oh! WIlliam. I hope it’s as good.
