Labor Day is a time to pay tribute to American workers, and all of their many contributions and achievements through the years. So, I decided to celebrate Labor Day by making a list of books that feature an interesting career.
- Heartbreak for Hire by Sonia Hartl features a heroine who works as a revenge specialist. I’ve never heard of one before, but it’s a pretty interesting occupation.
2. Life’s Too Short has Vanessa Price as a YouTube travel influencer. She makes a pretty good living traveling all over the world.
3. If You Only Knew by Kristan Higgins is about Jenny Tate, a wedding dress designer. I enjoyed the description of her career interesting as I’ve never known a wedding dress designer.
4. It’s Raining Men by Julie Hammerle has Annie a concierge doctor. A concierge doctor is one that is hired by someone to be on call at all times. I never heard of a concierge doctor before reading this book. It’s not an occupation for everyone, because she has to be on call constantly.
5. A Certain Appeal doesn’t come out until November 2, 2021. It’s a Pride and Prejudice retelling and in it, Liz Bennet is an executive assistant by day and stage kitten at a burlesque club by night.
6. In Aria’s Traveling Book Shop, Aria runs a bookshop out of a caravan and travels through France. I think this would be a spectacular way to make a living!
7. In Danielle Steel’s book The Butler, the main character is Joachim who is a modern-day Butler. I enjoyed how the book had details of the day-to-day life of a butler. Who knew they still existed?
8. In Beth Merlin’s Tell Me S’more we meet Perry Gilman, and we read about his path to become a Broadway Musical Composer. I thought the details of the life of a musical composer were fascinating.
9. In How to Walk Away, we meet Margaret who is the main character of the story. But, I enjoyed Ian, and his work as a physical therapist. I thought the author did an excellent job at highlight this career and how important physical therapy is to a recovering patient.
10. In The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, Lucy and Josh don’t have super glamorous jobs, they are both administrative assistants, but the majority of this book takes place in their workplace, so I thought this was a good choice for a Labor Day post.
Have you read any of these books? Are there books that you’ve enjoyed that have interesting careers for the characters?
Happy Labor Day!
great recommendations! i’ve seen the hating game all over twitter, and am excited to get to it.
Thank you Chelsea. I LOVED The Hating Game, one of my favorites this year.
Wendy, what a terrific idea for a Labor Day post! That kind of detail can really help bring a book to life. I hope you had a lovely Labor Day. Hugs on the wing.
Thank you! I had a great Labor Day, I hope you did too!
What a great idea for a post Wendy. The only one I read was How To Walk Away. I have a couple on my TBR, Though. Now you have me thinking that I need to keep track of interesting careers for next year. đ
Thank you Carla! I hope you enjoy the books on your TBR.
What a great post! How was Heartbreak for Hire? Was it funny? Clean? I thought Ariaâs Traveling Book Shop sounded interesting too.
Thank you Cindy. Heartbreak for Hire was a lot of fun, but pretty steamy, so probably not for you. But, Aria’s Travelling book shop was really fun and clean and I really enjoyed it.
